Experience:
Studying in CUHK Department of English had been my dream since my secondary school days. My first 2 attempts, in 2018 as a JUPAS applicant and in 2022 as an associate degree student, weren’t successful. Well, third time’s the charm.
My year as a student in the MA ELS programme is best summarized with the following adjectives: short, intense, diverse, stimulating, and abundant. I felt unprecedent growth in my literary knowledge and research techniques through the nightly lectures and seminar series by the English faculty, with their wide-ranging courses and scholarship covering postcolonial literature, critical theory, contemporary drama, and digital humanities. Every night lecture feels like a voyage into a new world, there’s always something new to explore and learn, be it works by the familiar Shakespeare or Keats, or contemporary novels outside the canon. At the end of the programme, I left CUHK with a thesis on a highly obscure writer, an extensive reading list of writers and theorists, and loads of wonderful memories with my classmates, who accompanied me through countless study sessions, research seminars, dinners before classes, and even on stage in the APC drama competition.
No matter whether you’re an English undergrad looking for further studies, or you’re thinking of a career change, or you’re looking for an intellectual challenge in the humanities, I urge you to consider the MA ELS programme in CUHK as your next stop. It will be an unforgettable experience, a sentiment shared by me and my many friends in the department.
