In a Flash: Writing Short Fiction Vol. 2
Date: February - May 2022
Conducted by Nicolette Wong, Writer in Residence
Supported by Ryan Ma, Intern
Participating Schools: St. Rose of Lima's School and Wah Yan College Kowloon
An introduction to the fundamentals of writing short stories, this three-month course combines brief lectures on craft and workshop critiques. Students will read selected works of prose by authors from diverse cultural backgrounds, explore different story ideas, and experiment with literary techniques. Discussion topics include point-of-view, narrative logic, character development, conflict, and effective dialogue. There will also be some discussion about how to develop a writer’s mindset. The instructor will provide personalised feedback on students’ work, while the group engages in peer review in class. Outstanding works will be selected for publication in a student writing anthology, to be published in 2022.
