Words and Spaces

Supervisor:

Prof. Jason Gleckman
Abstract

Words and spaces have undeniable power. Spaces can speak when no words are heard. Life can change in an instant because of words from a diagnosis or an announcement. Words have the power to affect others in life or death situations. There are people who use words to contort and to suppress. Some people use words to comfort and heal. The times where we need spaces instead of words let us grieve, listen, and process. This capstone project is a poetry portfolio displaying the delicate balance of words and spaces captured through writing. At times, there may be a complete disruption and a pause that must be taken in life, and at other times, there is a smooth flow with the words and spaces working in sync.

This capstone project consists of reflections based on the experiences gained from inspiration and learning. Journeying through life can be heavy with burdens. Those who have the most strength have known the most pain. People go through struggles with emotional, mental, and physical health. Yet there are still reasons to continue and to persevere. In experiencing their own journey, the author of this project worked on Words and Spaces. Influenced by the works of poets and writers in the past such as Ezra Pound and William Blake, Words and Spaces came to life. The reasons and purpose of this project will be further discussed in the introduction of the portfolio. Even through difficulties and struggles, there are countless possibilities to be explored, even if one may not prefer using writing or poetry as their outlet. Each and every person has their own potential, either still to be discovered or already a work-in-progress.

Reflection

As I reflect, I am thankful for everything that has happened and everything I’ve learned throughout the course of my four years studying English literature at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. A passion for creative writing ignited in me during my studies. At the same time, I had the opportunity to absorb new and exciting knowledge regarding books and writing. I came to understand the humor of Shakespeare’s writing, the skills of short stories, and overall, I got to explore my love of literature and writing. In particular, my capstone project reminded me to look for the good amidst the despair, to listen to myself and others, and to love what I write. I would like to thank Professor Gleckman for his steady guidance, encouragement, and enthusiastic support as my supervisor for the project.
