Rethinking Hong Kong
CALL FOR ABSTRACTS
CALL FOR ABSTRACTS – Rethinking Hong Kong: A Hong Kong Studies Symposium (Friday 8 December 2023)
This symposium invites papers from diverse disciplines that explore and interrogate how Hong Kong has adjusted to new conditions or changed to meet various situations since the 1980s. Over the past four decades, Hong Kong has undergone a series of adaptations, being transformed from a British colony to a Special Administrative Region of China. This has resulted in major policy changes, relating to language, education, and various areas of cultural production, such as literary, cinematic and the fine arts. Writers, artists, teachers, journalists, academics as well as cultural and civil society professionals in the city have themselves been implicated in these changes and have been forced to grapple with new conditions, opportunities and restrictions, just as the city itself has had to. We look forward to ideas and papers relating to these very topics. We will also invite non-academics to give short informal talks.
Interested scholars are encouraged to submit an abstract of 300-500 words along with a third-person biography of around 150 words in one WORD document for consideration.
Submissions should be sent to hongkongstudies@cuhk.edu.hk before Thursday 31 August 2023. Fully developed articles post-symposium (6,000-8,000 words) will be considered for publication in forthcoming issues of Hong Kong Studies.
