Neurodiversity in Digital Communication: Analysing Texting Habits, Perceptions, and Influential Factors on Neurodivergent Individuals
Supervisor:
Abstract
With substantial advancements in technology, the significance of digital communication channels, such as SMS (Short Message Service) and online blogging has undoubtedly increased. Shah and Holmes (2023) have identified a burgeoning trend in research focusing on the topic of “neurodiversity,” illustrating that this area remains relatively underexplored and nascent. Therefore, this study aims to delve into the digital communication habits and perceptions of neurodivergent individuals, specifically via the SMS platform, and to compare these with those of their neurotypical counterparts. Employing a qualitative methodology, this research analyzed text messages from self-identified neurodivergent and neurotypical individuals through convenience sampling, aiming to identify any linguistic variations. Additionally, the study included peer review sessions wherein participants from both neurodivergent and neurotypical groups were invited to evaluate text messages regarding the linguistic features and perception. The result enables a comprehensive analysis to understand the influence of linguistic variations of neurodivergent individuals. The findings of this study revealed notable linguistic variations in the text messages of neurodivergent individuals, characterized by distinct patterns in non-textual language, abbreviations, and syntax. Notably, texts from neurodivergent individuals were often perceived more negatively compared to those from their neurotypical counterparts, with these variations frequently misinterpreted as indicators of lower socioeconomic status or compromised cognitive and emotional stability. Further analysis suggested that these linguistic differences may stem from factors related to cognitive development, such as phonological processing and language input-output mechanisms. Additionally, psycholinguistic factors such as avoidance and anxiety were identified as significant contributors to these variations. The study underscores the importance of increasing awareness and understanding of neurodivergence in digital communication. It recommends accommodating neurodivergent communication styles on digital platforms to promote inclusivity and empower these individuals. Additionally, this study lays the groundwork for future research to investigate mechanisms such as reaction times in texting among neurodivergent individuals. Furthermore, this study could inspire the development of specialized tools for these users, ultimately enhancing inclusivity in digital communication.

Reflection
I am incredibly grateful for the whirlwind experience of being a senior entry English major student at CUHK. Learning everything in just four semesters was overwhelming, yet extremely rewarding. This capstone project, inspired by the unique and diverse people around me, felt like the perfect conclusion to my studies. Despite challenges like navigating a new topic with limited resources and managing a heavy coursework load, this project was deeply enriching.
This project holds a special place in my heart as it helped me discover that neurodiversity is not something to be ashamed of. Neurodiverse individuals should not feel pressured to conform to societal norms or hide their true selves, as they are not so different from neurotypical people. Through my research, I’ve learned that linguistic variations among neurodivergent individuals are not indicators of abnormality but rather reflect the different ways neurodiverse individuals navigate the world. This project was inspiring and empowering, affirming the value of neurodivergent individuals. As I continue to expand my research in postgraduate studies, I am committed to further empowering and understanding neurodiversity.
I am especially grateful to Professor Gonzales for his guidance during my capstone project. His patience and expertise were crucial in transforming my initial ideas into a project that I am truly proud of. This journey has been more than just an academic pursuit. It has been a significant period of personal growth and discovery.
