Student Sharing

Pinky Lui (HKPFS Awardee, Ph.D. 2024, M.Phil. 2020)

From my undergraduate years to my PhD journey, the department served as my home for a decade. I developed a deep passion for literature during my freshman year in the department and gradually evolved into a scholar within its supportive and nurturing environment. I was fortunate to be guided by professors who were not only experts in their respective fields but also kind and supportive in their teaching and supervision. They encouraged me to engage in original research projects and represent the department at international conferences. My experience in the department would have been vastly different without the presence of our wonderful professors and the research postgraduate community. It is the mutual support and respect between professors and students that truly make the department unique and welcoming.

Cora Liu (Ph.D. 2023)

My years as a PhD student were overshadowed by the pandemic. However, it is under these circumstances that I came to understand the caring and supportive nature of the department. I witnessed a sense of unity developing within our community, and I also gained an unparalleled sense of intimacy with the undergraduate students in my tutorials. The department fosters an inclusive and liberal atmosphere, encouraging not only academic research but also a wide range of student initiatives and projects. Personally, organizing a postgraduate roundtable in May 2023 with my fellow postgraduates was an incredibly rewarding experience. Additionally, I deeply appreciate the dedicated and pioneering attitude of our professors towards English literary studies, and I will always cherish the picturesque campus and the wonderful people I encountered there.

Emily Chow (PhD 2016, M.Phil. 2011)

It is a place that allows you to transcend time and space by showing you minds and souls of a spectrum of authors from ancient time to the 21st century, from Africa to Europe. You will have access to the world they lived in – experiencing lives that you could never possibly have.

Flora Mak (Ph.D. 2021, M.Phil. 2011)

Having stayed in the Department since undergraduate years, I enjoy a growing sense of intimacy with the people working here. Most teachers are conscientious in writing their lecture as well as conducting research. They are also supportive towards students, always eager and sincere when addressing our academic questions and needs. As a teaching assistant, I gain fun and inspiration from the literary discussion I hold with students during tutorials. I think it is this close-knit network among teachers and students that makes the study of literature in English warm and rewarding at CUHK.
