Title of Dissertation: Reviving Jane: Austen Beyond Modernized Cinematic Adaptations

Supervisor: Professor Evelyn Chan

Brief Introduction of research thesis: My project discusses the contemporary reception of Jane Austen in the age of popular culture and fandom through Roland Barthes “The Death of the Author” and Michel Foucault’s “What is an Author”. Through textual and critical analyses of the modernized cinematic adaptions of her novels and biographies, I aim explore the tension in dual position of Jane Austen as the Author - a renowned literary titan in highbrow academia and a beloved idol who represents romantic fantasies and escapism in popular culture.
