Title of Dissertation: Applying Cognitive Linguistics to Teaching English Past Tense and Progressive Aspect in the Foreign Language Classroom

Supervisor: Professor Gerald Nelson

A Cognitive Linguistics (CL)-based approach can potentially help learners develop a more meaningful understanding of grammar. The aim of this study is to examine the efficacy of different types of instruction for the development of the English tense-aspect system of intermediate EFL learners. This study may pave the way towards a rethinking of grammar instruction in the direction of a CL-based approach.
